Story :

My mate Stu and I were bored of making companys rich and paying to have all our work on our cars done so we decided to build our own car even though we have....how shall we put it??... very little mechanical experience. All the work was carried out in a garage with no lighting, electric or water.doh! but we managed.

But we do believe doing a job 100% and everything we did was checked and then checked again. safety first!!

We picked up a black Mk1 golf off a mate who lived down the road from us, 120k on the clock with quite a lot of service history, all the manuals and the bits with it for £300. Bargain! It was in fairly good nick and ran nicely, shame to pull it apart really but there ya go...Below is a picture of it when we picked it up.

Bodywork

On the first day of picking it up we had pretty much all of the cosmetic parts were pulled off and put straight in the bin ready for all the new clean parts to go on when we have finished. We desposed of the bumpers, wings, lights, glass seats, carpet, door cards, half the dash and all the little bits of plastic trim.

When we had eventually pulled all the parts off it looked pretty much a shell with the engine still in, it was then time to start work and get the body work sanded down and prepped for the body shop.

We were planning to smooth the rear and move the fuel filler cap to the rear, also move the exhaust so it came out of the side of the car so we had to fill and smooth these parts too which was quite a task to get right ill tell you!

The new wings were fitted which removed the ariel hole and the rest of the car was sanded inside and out, we cut out the spare wheel well to make a perspex window.(trick) . Then the hardest part....taking out the engine which was a pain but it took us a whole weekend and then the engine bay was ready for prepping.

As you can imagine the bay had 20 years worth of greece and muck which took a long time to get off, the whole car was then washed down in Gunk to get all the oil and bits off then we went crazy with masking tape and newspaper covering everything that we didnt want sprayed.

The whole strip down process took about 6-7 full weekends working but was definately the hardest part and now the car was then ready for the paint shop to be painted Nimbus grey outside and beige inside.
